Steel alloyed with chromium, which forms a thin passive layer on the surface and defends itself with it. Scratched, it rebuilds that layer on contact with air — which is why it is the only one of the five that genuinely needs no maintenance.

Brushed in one direction it shows a clear grain that catches light differently from every angle. That is its greatest visual asset and, at the same time, a mounting requirement: the grain direction has to be planned, because two pieces rotated against each other will read as two different materials.

The choice for façades, wet interiors and anywhere nobody will look after the piece.

Choose it if

zero maintenance for the life of the piece
resists moisture — bathrooms, kitchens, pools, façades
a brushed grain looks more expensive than anything painted

Skip it if

costs more than mild steel for the same area
fingerprints show on polished; less so on brushed
grain direction must be settled at design stage, not on site
