Mild steel

The most versatile of the five. Needs a protective finish.

Structural steel with no protective coating — the material we cut most often. It has a warm, slightly uneven tone with a faint mill scale, and it is the most forgiving choice for large, heavy forms.

It will not defend itself, though. Left bare it starts to rust within weeks, and faster in a damp interior. Every mild steel piece therefore leaves us protected: clear lacquer, blackening or a powder coat, depending on the look you want to keep.

It is the first choice when size and cost per square metre matter and the piece hangs indoors.

How we finish mild steel

The finish decides how the piece looks a year in, not on the day it goes up.

Ferro Raw

raw, straight off the cutting bed

wipe with a dry cloth; no abrasives

Ferro Coat

powder coating, RAL palette

water with a mild detergent; avoid solvents

Ferro Noir

blackened to a deep matt black

wipe with a dry cloth; refresh with wax on pieces that get touched

Lakier bezbarwny

protective clear coat

water with a mild detergent

When to choose it, when not to

Choose it if

  • best cost-to-area ratio on large forms
  • takes every finish, from raw to deep black
  • rigid at large letter sizes — fewer fixings than aluminium

Skip it if

  • rusts uncoated, including in damp interiors
  • the heaviest of the five — check the wall on large forms
  • a scratched coating must be repaired or rust creeps underneath
