Aluminium

Light — for walls that will not carry steel.

Roughly three times lighter than steel for the same volume. That is usually the only reason we reach for it — and it is reason enough: plasterboard, a suspended ceiling or an old partition wall often will not hold a large steel form.

It does not rust, it takes powder coating across the full RAL palette and it handles the outdoors well. It is soft, though: large, thin letters can ripple, so we match thickness to piece height more carefully than in steel.

The natural choice for large wall compositions and anywhere weight is the constraint.

How we finish aluminium

The finish decides how the piece looks a year in, not on the day it goes up.

Ferro Raw

raw, straight off the cutting bed

wipe with a dry cloth; no abrasives

Ferro Grain

brushed in one direction

wipe along the grain, never across it

Ferro Coat

powder coating, RAL palette

water with a mild detergent; avoid solvents

When to choose it, when not to

Choose it if

  • about three times lighter than steel — saves the fixing on weak substrates
  • does not corrode, handles façade exposure well
  • the full RAL palette in powder coating

Skip it if

  • soft — thin sheet on a large piece can ripple
  • raw aluminium looks cheap; it almost always needs a finish
  • costs more than mild steel for the same area
